I grew up watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. More than 20 years ago, it started airing a year before I even started kindergarten. (Yes, I’m that old.) In fact, you’re reading this from a guy who once dressed up as the Blue Power Ranger for junior AND senior kindergarten. The TV series helped define my childhood – I followed the Rangers through their battles with Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Regardless if it was space, dinosaurs or even high speed cars, I was there as a kid watching (or playing…there were action figures and video games) the adventures of these fighting heroes. Suffice it to say, it’s not surprising that I’m a bit intrigued, and feeling the nostalgia, of the new Power Rangers movie coming this year.
The premise for the movie is simple enough to follow: Five teenagers in a small town called “Angel Grove” uncover mysterious rocks that give them superhero abilities. With help from Zordon, a technological alien being, these teenagers become the Power Rangers and must save the world by stopping Rita Repulsa.
Obviously, certain details have changed from the original series to be rebooted for a feature film. The most notable difference shown in the trailer is that these teens have superhero abilities (i.e. strength, muscles, etc.); the characters in the original MMRP didn’t have extra abilities. But regardless of the change, and the obvious hesitation of a reboot film, the movie does look pretty good. It could be cheesy, but it could also be nostalgic and fun! If that’s not Power Rangers then what else is there?
Power Rangers comes out March 24, 2017. The movie stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks.
