Directed by So Yong Kim, Lovesong seems to be happily approaching the romance genre with a different attitude and point of view. The love story between two lonely women, here played by Jena Malone and 2016 breakout Riley Keough, is captured in the trailer with elegance and lush visuals, letting the audience know that the story won’t just pull on our heart strings but also be a feast for the eyes.
Kim has created some wonderfully introspective films in the past with In Between Days and Treeless Mountain along with the Paul Dano starring For Ellen. A filmmaker with an energy funneled into the small, quieter moments, Lovesong should be a tender and intimate look at a love story and the oftentimes tragic nature of “what if’s”.
