Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, and David Koechner have all signed onto the script, and according to Steve Carell, he has no idea what it’s about. He said that filming will start in February and will be released later that summer. He even said that the crew wanted a second film and they had to persuade the studio to allow it, since as soon as the first one was done they wanted a second one. He also states he wants Brick (his character) to stay just the same as the first movie and is amazed at how people continue quoting “I’m in a glass box of emotion” or “Stay classy San Diego.”
And while Applegate didn’t appear in the teasers, Koechner has told E! News that “Yes, yes,” she will appear and spoke about the movie’s plot. “It’s set around the advent of the 24-hour news channel. They’re writing a script right now so no specific details. . . I’d like to see Ron and Champ in bed,” (Champ is his character), “Did you see the first film? Champ’s got a crush on Ron, clearly. So the full evolution of that would be Ron and Champ in bed.”
Director Adam McKay told Empire that, “We know these guys never deal well with change, and the good thing is that there’s a big blast of change coming, according to the regular timeline. We’re going to be throwing a lot of innovation at them, and they’re not going to handle it well.” He later goes on saying that the new change is, “It’s right when all the news started changing with the 24-hours news cycle in ’78 or ’79. All of a sudden, local news stations diversified and had Latino anchors and African-American anchors, and any time you’re talking about diversity and the Action News team, that’s always fun to deal with.”
In another article with Salon, McKay states that, “ Keep in mind we’re still writing the story, but I’ll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I’ll give that. I’ll give you one other one: bowling for dollars.”
While it seems that there still is time needed to agree on a plot, we all hope that this film will live up to its highly appraised expectations.
