Get those tissues and handkerchiefs ready, there’s a good chance we’ll start 2017 with a few “doggy” tears. Just in time for National Dog Day (August 26), Universal Pictures released the trailer for A Dog’s Purpose, a film based on the 2010 novel written by W. Bruce Cameron.
Directed by Oscar-nominated Lasse Hallstrom (The Cider House Rules, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat), the film tells the story of one dog who, by a series of reincarnations, tries to find the meaning of his own existence through the lives of humans around him. Voiced by Josh Gad, “dog” will try to discover what is the true meaning of life and more importantly: why does food taste so much better in the trash?
Personally speaking, I’m not much of a “film-where-dog-dies” fan, those always get me down. Nevertheless, I believe the intention of this particular film is to actually get us inside a dog’s psyche, share his point of view and make us understand why is it so important to have them by our side.
Also starring Dennis Quaid, Peggy Lipton, Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, Juilet Rylance, Luke Kirby, John Ortiz and Pooch Hall, the two-and-a-half minute trailer shows sparks of comedy and some emotional scenes. Question: Will this be one of those films that touch the very bottom of our souls, making us better people and dog owners? Or will it just be another random “canine tail”? We will find out soon enough.
