Is this going to the film that provides justice for David Oyelowo losing out on an Oscar nomination for his towering performance in Selma? One can only hope as he manages to impress and inspire in the trailer alone for Amma Asante’s newest film, A United Kingdom. Oyelowo stars alongside Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike, taking on a very different role than hers in Gone Girl. Based on a true story the film looks lush and powerful and as a fan of Asante’s Belle (an underrated gem of 2014) I can’t wait to see what she does with such a poignant story. This simply isn’t one to miss.
Starring David Oyelowo (Selma) and Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl); and directed by Amma Asante (Belle), A UNITED KINGDOM tells the inspiring true story of Seretse Khama, the king of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker that he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments. Seretse and Ruth defied family, apartheid and empire – their love triumphed over every obstacle flung in their path and in so doing they transformed their nation and inspired the world.
