Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind the continued success of the Despicable Me franchise, recently released a new teaser for an upcoming animated musical project known only as Sing. With this news, it appears that Illumination has been hard at work cranking their animation team to the limit as another one of their projects, The Secret Life of Pets, will be released on July 8. Sing, with the same idea in mind, is currently scheduled to have a Christmas 2016 release. With a star-studded cast, and a plethora of songs for them to perform, one can only imagine what to expect from Illumination’s first attempt at the musical comedy format.
Set in a world inhabited only by animals, Sing follows Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a dapper koala who runs and maintains a once proud theater that has been hit by hard times. Cherishing his theater above all else, Moon concocts a plan to get his theater back on top by announcing a singing competition for all to attend with a $100,000 grand prize. With the results pointing towards five lead contestants, a mouse (Seth MacFarlane) who cons his victims as well as he plays, an elephant teen (Tori Kelly) with a gigantic case of stage fright, an overworked mom (Reese Witherspoon) run rampant by a litter of 25 piglets, a young gangster gorilla (Taron Egerton) looking to break free of his family’s life of crime and a punk porcupine (Scarlett Johansson) struggling to go solo. With the theater, and its contestants’ dreams, at stake, this so-called “world’s greatest singing competition” just might have to be if Moon wants his life’s ambition to return to its former glory.
Sing, directed by Garth Jennings, is planned to be released in theaters across the United States on December 21. Be sure to check out the teaser below, and if you find yourself swinging to the film’s soundtrack, be sure to follow their Facebook page.
