It’s been nearly 20 years since Will Smith punched an alien in the face in the most awesome welcoming committee Earth had to offer. Next summer, those aliens are coming back to return the favor.
20th Century Fox released the first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, the anticipated sequel to the 1996 sci-fi/action hit, Independence Day. The cast includes returning members like Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and Vivica A. Fox, along with new members like Liam Hemsworth, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jessie Usher. Sadly, Will Smith is not returning for the sequel, but original director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, White House Down) is back behind the camera.
The new movie takes place in the modern era with the alien invasion of the first movie now referred to as “The War of 1996.” Since the invasion, the world has used to recovered alien technology to advance their defense mechanisms. But when a new, much larger invasions looms over Earth, a group of humans will band together in attempt to fight for the planet’s freedom.
The trailer is very impressive, showing off its rumored $200 million budget with impressive special effects and the new designs for the alien spaceships. Of course, there’s also a few of Emmerich’s film trademarks: big cast, destructions of cities, ominous dialogue and aerial dogfights between human and alien ships. Amongst other big-name summer blockbusters like Warcraft and the sequels to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Now You See Me, it’ll be interesting to see how well the movie will perform. Check out the movie’s impressive interactive website after seeing the trailer to refresh the memory and let’s hope for another epic speech by Pullman.
