Most die-hard readers will claim that the movie is never better than the book, and while that may be true, movie adaptions can often bring their own magic in transforming your favourite novel into a silver-screen success. (We live in hope!) Here’s a handy list of book adaptions hitting the big screen in 2016.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – Ransom Riggs
Directed by Tim Burton, and starring the likes of Eva Green, Judi Dench, Samuel L. Jackson, Allison Janney and Asa Butterfield, this adaption of Ransom Riggs’ debut novel is set for release on 25 December 2016. The story follows teenager Jacob, who journeys to an abandoned orphanage on a mysterious island and discovers its inhabitants were more than just a little peculiar…
The 5th Wave – Rick Yancey
Based on Rick Yancey’s popular novel detailing successive waves of an alien invasion and the humans who fight back, The 5th Wave movie will be released early next year, on 15 January 2016. The movie stars Chloe Grace Moretz in the main role as heroine Cassie Sullivan, accompanied by Nick Robinson as Ben Parish, Alex Roe as Evan Walker, and Liev Schreiber as Colonel Vosch.
Allegiant – Veronica Roth
The third book of Veronica Roth’s bestselling Divergent trilogy has been split into two movies, following the trend of the franchises before it. Shailene Woodley and Theo James reprise their roles of Tris and Four respectively, as they break out of their fenced-in city to discover the mystery of what lies outside. The movie is scheduled for release on 18 March 2016, and you can check out the trailer here.

The Jungle Book – Rudyard Kipling
The timeless children’s classic is brought to life in this Disney animated feature, set for release on 15 April 2016. Stars such as Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Scarlet Johansson, Christopher Walken, Lupita Nyong’o and Ben Kingsley are the voices behind some of the fearsome characters in the movie.
A Monster Calls – Patrick Ness
Based on the heartbreaking 2011 novel written by Ness, A Monster Calls is a fantastical story featuring both real monsters and the ones we encounter in real-life, under various guises. The movie is set for release on 14 October 2016, and features Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones and Sigourney Weaver.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – JK Rowling
Based on the Harry Potter textbook, the Fantastic Beasts movie expands on the world outlined in the book, detailing the life of the fictional author Newt Scamander. Eddie Redmayne takes on the main role, accompanied by Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton. The movie is scheduled for release on 18 November 2016.
Inferno – Dan Brown
The adaption of the fourth book in Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series is set for release on 14 October 2016, and sees Tom Hanks reprising his role as Langdon, a Harvard professor of symbology. Felicity Jones, Omar Sy and Ben Foster star in supporting roles.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – Seth Grahame Smith
The zombiefied version of Jane Austen’s classic tale of love, matches and mismatches hits the screens on 25 September 2015. Lily James stars as Elizabeth Bennet, with Sam Riley as Mr Darcy, and Lena Headey, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith and Suki Waterhouse in supporting roles.
Me Before You – Jojo Moyes
Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin take the lead roles in the adaption of Jojo Moyes’ bestselling novel, about a woman who forms an unlikely relationship with the paralysed man she is hired to take care of. The movie will be released on 4 March 2016.
The BFG – Roald Dahl
Steven Spielberg is at the helm of this adaption of the childhood favourite, set for release on 1 June 2016. The big friendly giant is voiced by Mark Rylance, with newcomer Ruby Barnhill as Sophie.
