It’s been a banner 2015 for Britpop icons Blur. Their first new album since 2003, The Magic Whip, has been critically acclaimed and there’s much anticipation for their performance at Madison Square Garden on Friday (the show’s opener, Courtney Barnett, is herself having a pretty fantastic year).
Now, the band is set to cap off the year with a new theatrical documentary on the lengthy recording process for the album. New World Towers will document the original 2013 sessions for the album that were done at the spur of the moment in Hong Kong following the cancellation of a festival the group was scheduled to headline in Japan. The documentary will also detail guitarist Graham Coxon’s successful effort to salvage the tapes in November 2014, singer Damon Albarm’s subsequent return trip to Hong Kong for musical and lyrical inspiration and the further recording of the record over of the course of Winter 2014-15.
New World Towers is the third documentary on the band, following 1993’s Starshaped and 2010’s acclaimed No Distance Left to Run. The film is directed by Sam Wrench, who released a documentary on Mary J. Blige earlier this year.
The film will be released in the U.K. on December 2, and you can view the trailer below. So far, no American release date or distributor has been announced.
