Back in 2006, Sylvester Stallone silenced those who claimed he was too old to return to the role of Rocky Balboa in the stellar comeback film of the same name. Tired of the franchise’s decent into near-cartoon craziness, the aging action star gave us a film that completely lived up to the gritty realism and raw emotion that made the original Rocky such a classic. Now it’s time to pass the mantle to a new generation. Expectations are high, but if the second trailer for Ryan Coogler’s Creed is to be believed, then we’re in for a more than worthy successor in Michael B. Jordan.
Seeing as the film focuses on the deceased Apollo Creed’s son Adonis Johnson, we’re treated to a fairly different look than we’ve grown used to with the other Rocky films. In fact, the slick, near documentary-esque look of the film compares to that of Coogler’s excellent previous effort, Fruitvale Station. The characters seem very rich as well, with Jordan’s aggressive energy matched with Stallone’s more stoic presence in a way that does not feel like a cheesy ‘Karate Kid’ type scenario, as it very well could have. In fact, just in this trailer alone we get a very nice mix of genuine drama and warm humor between the two of them. If this dynamic ends up being as strong in the final product, look for Creed to be one of the most entertaining movies of the holiday season.
