The first trailer for the Carey Mulligan-led Suffragette is here and immediately has catapulted itself into one of my most anticipated films of the year. With an enormously talented cast that consists of not only Mulligan but Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff, Romola Garai, and Ben Whishaw (umm The Hour reunion please?), and with an interesting and timely topic, the film is certainly attention-grabbing. Feminism has become a bigger word in our media and entertainment discourse (thankfully), with pop-stars, directors, behind-the-scenes tech and writers becoming more vocal about the disparity between them and their male counterparts.
The trailer is a knockout, promising tension, high stakes, and emotional payoff. It’s written by, directed by, and starring women, and with a year ahead that’s already promising a male dominance, I can’t help but be drawn more to this film.
It would be nice to see some diversity in the cast, however. A big issue in feminism has been the erasure of voices of women of color. Sexism targets every women, not simply a group among them, and hopefully the film will shed more light on the issue.
Check out the synopsis and trailer below.
Director Sarah Gavron’s film, starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, Natalie Press, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, will open in limited release on October 23rd and will be in theaters across the country by Thanksgiving. SUFFRAGETTE is written by Abi Morgan (“The Iron Lady,” “The Hour”) and produced by Alison Owen (“Elizabeth,” “Temple Grandin”) and Faye Ward (“Jane Eyre,” “Dancing on the Edge”).
SUFFRAGETTE is a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early 20th-century Britain. The stirring story centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. Inspired by true events, SUFFRAGETTE is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives.
