Meryl Streep will win the Golden Globe for her performance in “Ricki and the Flash”. I guarantee it.
I don’t usually make such big statements based off of a trailer, but if there is one thing Streep does more than winning Oscar nominations, it’s winning Golden Globes. Her next film looks tailor-made for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to award (it also helps she sings. They love singing!)
The trailer paints a familiar portrait of a dysfunctional family, but it also looks like it will be another knockout from Streep. She plays Ricki, a guitar player who is estranged from her family. She gets a call from her ex-husband – played by Streep’s “Sophie’s Choice” co-star Kevin Kline – who informs her that their daughter’s husband has left her. Streep’s real daughter, Mamie Gummer, plays her.
Ricki finds herself back home, with her ex-husband and children. She appears to be an afterthought in their lives and must struggle to find her way back in. “Ricki and the Flash” is directed by Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (“The Silence of the Lambs”) and written by Diablo Cody, an Oscar-winner for her “Juno” screenplay.
Thematically, the trailer doesn’t offer any hints at anything new, but I think it’s going to be a lot of fun watching Streep in this role. She has a scene in the trailer where she confronts her daughter’s estranged husband that plays powerfully just in the clip. It’s her awards scene.
“Ricki and the Flash” will be released Aug. 7, 2015.
