This is a fantastic trailer. It’s fun, it doesn’t give away the entire film, and it gives us just enough hints about the tone and narrative to get us interested.
I can confidentially say that I will be seeing the film in theaters when it’s released. Distributed by Open Road Films Dope seems to angling for a different type of teen centered film, one that rebuffs the likes of John Green which I can’t help but celebrate. Am I reading too far into a film I’ve only seen a two-minute trailer of? Probably, but it sucked me in pretty immediately. Check out the synopsis and trailer below and let us know if it got your attention too!
A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, in DOPE, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.
