Whiplash. What can I say about this movie that hasn’t been already said? Considered by many one of the best films of 2014, it wasn’t a surprise that it got a few well-deserved Oscars this year. Writer and director Damien Chazelle didn’t just transport us to a ‘jazz-up world’ where you have to be the best in order to be with the best, he also managed to make us feel all that musical energy – and even a little fear – in just a little over a 100 minutes.
The film premiered in Sundance last year and since then, it immediately began a long and well-received drive along the Awards Season road. The film however, didn’t exactly began as a movie per se. Back in 2013, Chazelle was low on funding, so he decided to film a scene from a script he had written. This short 18-minute production included J.K. Simmons as jazz instructor Terence Fletcher and Johnny Simmons as jazz student Andrew Neiman, all this in hope for funding for a full-length film. Those 18 minutes were so powerful in every way that…well, you know what happened next.
Just a few days ago, the original short film was put on Youtube. Now we can all see why this film was nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay category at the Oscars.
