Box-office estimates are in for the weekend of February 20th-22nd, 2015.
#1- Fifty Shades of Grey:
While the porn BDSM movie took an expected drop from its gargantuan opening weekend, its $23.2M take was still enough for first place this weekend as well. Stateside, the pic has a current total of $130.1M but when overseas numbers are added in, Fifty Shades has already amassed more then $400M worldwide. So basically, if this movie just stops making money entirely, it’s already grossed enough to fund both sequels with a pretty penny left over for Universal. And by a pretty penny I mean like $100M dollars.
#2- Kingsman: The Secret Service:
With a somewhat steep drop as well, the British spy movie only grossed $17.5M this weekend for a $67.1M total. While a better hold would have boded well for the action flick, it’s still got its sights set on a total above $100M. Being a strong overseas contender as well, this still has all the necessary components for potential series.
#3- The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water:
‘Who lives in pineapple under the sea?’ ‘SpongeBob SquarePants!’ ‘Who makes boatloads of money and is in the green?’ ‘SpongeBob SquarePants!’ That’s right, the SpongeBob sequel made another $15.5M this weekend for a $125.1M total. Ultimately, the sea sponge and co. could eventually rise to a $150M total, over $60M more than the first pic made.

#4- McFarland, USA:
Then, Kevin Costner’s kajillionth pic in the past few years debuted to $11.3M this weekend. About in the same range as his last three pics, the inspirational story is looking to end between $30-$40M. Though none of the films have stood out at the box-office, Costner is definitely re-carving a place for himself in Hollywood.
#5- The DUFF:
Right on ‘McFarland’s tale, the most recent entry into the high school comedy genre made $11M in its debut. Though this number isn’t entirely impressive either, the poignant comedy was made for a cheap $8.5M and will no doubt make back its budget and more with a stateside total above $30M. Like many a high school comedy before, home media and streaming could be where this film really breaks out.
