“Fuck the police, coming straight from the underground,” perfectly represents what N.W.A. stood for. I don’t mean what the acronym means, but rather their stasis of non-violent protest with music clearly bounded by the first amendment of the United States. Yet, it didn’t mean that their music would be interpreted amongst those who have it bad. They had prominence during the L.A. Riots with their release of Niggaz4Life, and this film expresses their whole history, which sort of has me at ease because I’m excited for a proper hip-hop film that isn’t an original story. (Yes, 8 Mile counts, Eminem’s casting is just a coincidence).
O’Shea Jackson, Aldis Hodge, and Neil Brown, Jr. play Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella respectively. Corey Hawkins plays head producer Dr. Dre, while Jason Mitchell plays the face of NWA and Ruthless Records, Eazy-E. This F. Gary Gray film is set for August 14, and now the waiting game starts. I’ll just make sure I’m cruising down the street in my six-fo’ before I head to the theater. Check the trailer below.
