Box-office estimates are in for the weekend of January 30th -February 1st.
#1- American Sniper:
It’s the movie that can’t be stopped. That’s right, even against Super Bowl Weekend, the blockbuster was film is set to make $31.8M for an early total of $248.9M. Granted, that is around a 50% drop from last weekend, seeing the rest of the numbers on this list will put that into perspective. Movies with target audiences of the older male demographic don’t make money Super Bowl Weekend. Period. Or at least that was the theory up until American Sniper.
#2- Paddington:
That being said, it’s no surprise the well-reviewed kiddie pic was able to hold so well this weekend. With an $8.5M 3-day tally, it’s current total stands at $50.5M. That may not seem like the most impressive number for a stateside CGI pic, but the source material, Paddington Bear, doesn’t have anywhere near the same amount of fan-fair as similar film Alvin and the Chipmunks. On top of that, the film, full of British stars, has made nearly $150M oversees. So it’s already a winner in terms of box-office.
#3- Project Almanac:
Is the found-footage genre dead or did this film just not have an interesting enough premise to draw teens in this weekend? The time travel pic opened to a measly $8.5M. A similar comparison can be found in That Awkward Moment, a teen-centric pic that opened to nearly identical numbers this same weekend last year. That went on to gross around $26M, which is where the bar has now been set for this pic.

#4- Black or White:
The Kevin Costner-Octavia Spencer starrer failed at its attempted counter programing this weekend as well, opening to a meager $6.5M. The Super Bowl might not be the only culprit for these small numbers, as the racial-themed pic has been receiving mostly negative views. Bad word of mouth combined with a somewhat heavy premise does not bode well for this pics chances.
#5- The Boy Next Door:
And then there was JLo. The stalker-themed film had a steep fall to make only $6M on its second weekend for a $24.6M total. It looks like negative reviews are taking more of a toll on this than originally anticipated. This brings into question the potential box-office for Fifty Shades of Grey, as many sources have dubbed this film a lighter version of the worldwide phenomenon. Yes, Fifty Shades is going to have a blockbuster opening, but this pic hints that the S&M themed flick will need good reviews if it wants any significant box-office staying power.
