Estimates are in at the box office for the weekend of December 26-28th 2014.
#1 – The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies:
It looks like fans of the original Lord of the Rings Trilogy are showing up to theaters to see how the final installment of the prequel series will end, after all. Its $41.4M second weekend was not only an increase over The Hobbit 2, but was also greater than that of The Hobbit through the same point. Its current $168.5M 12-day total is also putting it at number one among the other films in The Hobbit Trilogy. If all holds well, the final film might end up being the most profitable of all the Hobbits and could even reach a gross close to those of the original three films.
#2 – Unbroken:
It’s amazing news for the biographical film about Louie Zamperini. Its three-day weekend of $31.7M combines with its awesome Thursday gross to create a $47.3M four-day total. And I can’t imagine this film having any large drops over the coming months. Having worked at a bookstore the weeks leading up to Christmas, I can tell you it felt like one out of every three books sold was Unbroken. And not only did they sell like crazy, but almost every single one of those customers mentioned their excitement to see the film. So it’s safe to say this film is going to follow in the footsteps of Louie himself and have some long legs.
#3 – Into the Woods:
While this weekend’s musical had awesome numbers, it was less of a surprise. I mean, it’s a Disney musical based off of a hugely successful play that stars Meryl Streep and has already racked up some awards noms. So why exactly were you lowballing projections, Disney? With a $31M three day for a $46.1M four-day total, this is absolutely going to be a solid earner.

#4 – Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb:
Merry Christmas Ben Stiller! While $55.3M still isn’t a great total, the third film in the trilogy brought in $20.6M this weekend, up from last weekend’s total! With another week and kids being off from school, Night at the Museum 3 might be able to chug to the $100M mark before the end of its run.
#5 – Annie:
Also up this weekend was the other musical film in theaters. Annie brought in $16.6M to bring its total to $45.8M. The situation here is the same with the Museum film. If kids and families keep showing up, the musical remake might be able to crawl past the $100M mark in the long run, as well.
