Weekend box office numbers are in for December 19-21st 2014.
#1 – The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
This is how an era ends. Not with a bang. Not with a whimper, either, but with more of a shoulder shrug and an “Eh, not bad.” Having opened on a Wednesday, it brought in $56.2M this weekend for a five-day total of $90.6M. If the final installment in the sequel trilogy plays out like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, this last entry should end its run with at least $260M here. And let’s not forget about overseas, where $800,000,000M seems like a likely result.
#2 – Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
I was really hoping for a win for this film. It has so many positive factors that should have overcome the “too late for a sequel” factor. Factor number one: Robin Williams’s goodbye speech in the film. Factor number two: the addition of new cast members Rebel Wilson and Dan Stevens. And factor number three: it’s actually supposed to be pretty good. But sadly, the big budget CGI product only brought in a paltry $17.3M in its opening. The saving grace here is the fact that Christmas break, a.k.a. the time of year when kids are out of school, is just around the corner. And here’s hoping they show up to this film.
#3 – Annie
This movie better hope the sun will come out tomorrow. The musical remake started its run with $16.3M. Les Mis, which opened a little closer to Christmas last year, brought in more than that in one day. Like I said, though, if Christmas break weren’t right around the corner, this film’s potential numbers would be extremely dreary. But with positive audience reaction and lots of upcoming free time, Annie should at least have a solid run.

#4 – Exodus: Gods and Kings
Yikes. Like, seriously. Yikes. The bible based flick dropped like a rock from its already mediocre perch to grab $8M this weekend. Its ten day total of $38.9M is still lower than what this year’s other big budget bible pic, Noah, brought in within 3 days. Who would’ve thought that an epic blockbuster directed by Ridley Scott (the guy behind Alien) and starring Christian Bale (this generation’s Batman) would have bombed this badly? Did I say yikes already?
#5 – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1
The massive bird continues to descend toward a possible #1 for the year. This weekend’s $7.8M haul brings the film’s total to $289.3M stateside. Though it’s still lagging a bit in overseas cash as well, this is still a solid earner for Lionsgate overall. And it’s up to THG: Mokcingjay – Part 2 to be the only film in the series to cross that coveted billion dollar mark.
