Yes, yes, yes! Why all the hype for a completed script, you ask? It seems like Star Trek 3 has finally been slated for a 2016 release, just in time for Star Trek’s 50th television anniversary. And as you can imagine, it will probably be filled with Easter eggs, delightful references, and possible guest appearances from the original cast, all to pay homage to its 50th.
While 2013’s Star Trek: Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams will not return to direct Star Trek’s next film (seeing as he is busy assembling the latest Star Wars), director Roberto Orci will be sitting at Star Trek 3‘s helm. Given the reception of previous works such as Transformers and Fringe, Trekkies can only hope that Orci will be able to give the same punch of thrilling, fast-paced sci-fi action to this latest installment.
Fortunately, Roberto Orci will be returning as a screenwriter for the script, however co-writer Alex Kurtzman will not be making a return, as he’s busy directing Universal’s The Mummy reboot and Damon Lindelof is occupied with his HBO series The Leftovers. Luckily, Orci will be collaborating with screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne to make the third Star Trek installment possible.
And to make Star Trek 3 even more of a reality, Orci reported on TrekMovie the trio had finished the film’s script:

From what Orci released, Star Trek 3 will adhere to the “five-year mission” featured in Star Trek’s original series and continue where Star Trek: Into Darkness left off. When asked about releasing some slight spoilers to the film, Orci teased that it will take place “in deep space,” as most people would expect from a high-flying sci-fi movie like Star Trek.
In addition to the first script already completed, Benedict Cumberbatch has hinted he may be featured in the new film, but whether or not he’s returning as John Harrison/Khan is uncertain. For now, Trekkies must be satisfied knowing the first script has been completed and Star Trek 3 most definitely will happen, with the hope for some major plot points to be released in the coming months.
