Many movie musicals have become enduring fixtures of Western pop culture. Masterpieces like Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and The Sound of Music (1965) have been lauded not only as triumphs of musical storytelling, but as pieces of cinema able to stand alongside the other giants of the medium like Citizen Kane (1941) and The Godfather (1972). But for every West Side Story (1961) and Grease (1978) there are countless other movie musicals that have been forgotten or outright ignored.
