Édgar Ramírez in ‘The Liberator’

"Libertador"

For those of you who live or grew up in South America, the name Simón Bolívar should ring a bell. The story of the Venezuelan political and military hero who freed several Latin American countries from the Spanish Monarchy and helped establish democracy has been told many times, and thanks to Venezuelan director Alberto Arvelo, we will hear it again from a new point of view.

Arvelo’s The Liberator is an upcoming period biopic of Simón Bolívar written by Children Of Men’s Timothy J. Sexton. It stars Édgar Ramírez (as Bolivar), Maria Valverde, Juana Costa, Danny Huston, Iwan Rheon and it follows Bolívar’s quest for independence and his longing for a unified South America. The film debuted last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it is scheduled to have a limited release on August 22nd thanks to Cohen Media Group.

The trailer shows some outstanding cinematography and Ramírez nailing his role as Bolívar, but we will have to wait and see the full thing. In the meantime, watch the trailer for The Liberator below and let us know what you think!
