I don’t know about you, but I really dig Robert Downey Jr.
Is it the charm? The wit? The brown eyes? Who knows, but-preteen crushing aside–he consistently pulls my attention as a performer. Over the past few years, he’s stayed mainly in blockbuster land and has crushed it, becoming one of the most marketable movie stars today. Whether it be Iron Man or Sherlock Holmes, he’s added charisma and heart to roles that he could have simply been sleeping through.
So, as much as I love my Marvel fanfare, it’s awfully nice to see him branch out and return to a more grounded story. Due to his recent superhero affiliation, audiences have forgotten just how varied his work has been and hopefully this film will help remind them. The trailer looks like the story could lean into the predictability factor, but it’s too soon to tell. It helps that the cast is absolutely spoiled with talent. Check out the synopsis and trailer below. The Judge arrives in theaters October 10th–who’s excited?
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures comes “The Judge,” which pairs two-time Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr. (“Chaplin,” “Tropic Thunder”) and Oscar winner Robert Duvall (“Tender Mercies,” “Crazy Heart”), starring together for the first time on the big screen. The film also stars Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring”) and Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton (“Sling Blade,” “Friday Night Lights”), and is directed by David Dobkin (“Wedding Crashers”).
In “The Judge,” Downey stars as big city lawyer Hank Palmer, who returns to his childhood home where his estranged father, the town’s judge (Duvall), is suspected of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.
