As most people have optimistically predicted, it looks like Daniel Radcliffe has successfully moved away from the Harry Potter franchise. From horror films to Broadway musicals, he is completely pulling away from magic wands and owls; and from the look of this trailer, it seems that he will finally get his first taste of the “rom-com” genre.
In the first look of Michael Dowse’s What If, we get a trailer full of romantic comedy clichés. Wallace (Radcliffe) is a med school dropout who decides to take a break from the dating game. Of course that is when he meets Chandry (Zoe Kazan), a quirky girl who seems to be perfect for Wallace except for the fact that she has a long-term boyfriend. So instead of trying to find someone else, he just simply says the phrase “What if?” and becomes her best friend while also falling in love with her.
However, if you do watch this trailer, it might not even be necessary to go see the film in the first place. In a whopping 3 minutes, we get all major plot points pretty much handed to us on a plate. It’s like the director doesn’t even want us to see the movie at all. Sure, we know the romantic clichés but give us a little mystery for God’s sake (not like there’s much mystery in romance films to begin with) . Thank God Radcliffe doesn’t try to impersonate an American accent at least.
What If is scheduled to hit theaters August 1st.
