James Gilbert’s Oscar Predictions
Best Picture
What should win: Gravity
What will win: 12 Years a Slave
Really, both of these films deserve this prestigious award; they both capture the undying spirit of the human spirit in the face of adversity in a way that no other film has captured in years. But, for me, Gravity speaks in a language that is more universal, using beautiful symbolism to convey images and thoughts of faith, love, life, and death, comparable to the works of Stanley Kubrick.
Best Director
Who should win: Alfonso Cuaron
Who will win: Alfonso Cuaron

Cuaron created a film that was a total experience, one that sucked you in and didn’t let you go. He utilized the greatest technology he had available to create a film that was not only stunning visually, but captivated on the most visceral levels, gripping into you with moments of pure unadulterated terror and sheer cinematic awe. I left that theater physically and emotionally exhausted. Gravity was easily the most powerful experience I have ever had in a movie theater, and any director who can do that to an audience member is a winner in my book.
(Also, I believe that it is a gross miscalculation on the Academy’s part for not recognizing Spike Jonze as one of the best directors of the year.)
