Melissa Berne’s Oscar Predictions
Best Supporting Actress
Will Win: Lupita Nyong’o
Should Win: Lupita Nyong’o
Ok, so this is a showdown between Lupita and Jlaw and everyone knows it. While I enjoyed JLaw role in the overrated American Hustle, Lupita’s meek and shaken role in 12 Years A Slave leaves you haunted. Especially that last shot of her when she faints as Solomon leaves the plantation.
Best Supporting Actor
Will Win: Jared Leto

As much of a lady hard-on I have for THE WOLF, Hill probably played an exaggerated version of himself. Meanwhile, Jared Leto managed to play a transgender woman in a non-parody way.
Best Actress
Will Win: Cate Blanchett
Should Win: Sandra Bullock.

To me, this performance evoked more emotion out of me than her character in The Blind Side. Sandra’s performance had us sympathized with her when her character wanted to die, and when she wanted to live. I was on the edge of suspense and emotion the whole time.
Best Actor
Will Win: Matthew McConaughey
Should Win: Leonardo DiCaprio.

Ok, so not only is this man overdue for an Oscar, but Leo is a force of excessive nature in this film! I’ve seen this 4 times, and that does not happen often for 3-hour long films. He dissolved himself in the work. And he was so committed to the point of trying to make this film since 2008. Honestly, he deserves the gold for that OD on the Ludes scene alone. A scene that has become (already) legendary.
Best Picture
Will Win: I really can’t pick one: it’s either American Hustle (For god knows what reason) or 12 Years A Slave.
Should Win: The Wolf of Wall Street
As awesome it would be for a sci-fi movie (Gravity) to win Best Pic or the critic-favorite 12 Years A Slave, my favorite movie experience of 2013 has got to be THE WOLF. I, for one, can appreciate a film that depicts awful people doing awful things. For all the backlash it got for “glamorizing” the things done in the film, it started a conversation. In films, things don’t always need to be sugar coated, and they don’t always need to front a “good guy.” There’s a small percentage in all of us who would prefer the finer things in life. It was interesting and entertaining to see characters on screen who act on every impulse and have no moral compass.
Best Director
Will Win: Alfonso Cuaron
Should Win: Alfonso Cuaron
Best Animated Film
Will Win: Frozen
Should Win: The Croods
Yes, I know I’m in the minority. As charming and lovely as Frozen was, I wouldn’t put it in my top 20 favorite films. The Croods was touching, vibrant and HILARIOUS. I guess, here, I am choosing a heartfelt comedy over a musical.
Cinematography
Will Win: Gravity
Should Win: Gravity
There’s not much to say besides 17-MINUTE OPENING SHOT WITHOUT A CUT.
