Sony Pictures and Scott Rudin are developing the upcoming book Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation by Blake J. Harris as a feature film to be directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Rogen and Goldberg will co-write and co-direct with Harris serving as Executive Producer. Sony Pictures and Scott Rudin previously brought Moneyball and The Social Network from page to screen and found great success with both. Console Wars focuses on the “David-and-Goliath showdown” between Sega and Nintendo in a time when Nintendo was king of the video game market. Having this team behind this project is important because while I personally may find a “business thriller” about the console wars of the early 90’s deeply fascinating, I doubt general audiences will feel the same. The interesting twist here is having Rogen and Goldberg write and direct. The Social Network was a pretty dramatic affair and to a certain extent so was Moneyball. Having Rogen and Goldberg around seems like it would liven up the topic a bit and make it more interesting for general audiences. As fan of their work and of video games in general this is something I’m definitely going to keep an eye on. Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation will be released on May 13 and is available for pre-order from Amazon and other booksellers. And remember folks, Sega does what nintendon’t.
