Shia LaBeouf wrote and directed “HowardCantour.com” , a short film that offers an honest take at the life of an online film critic, starring Jim Gaffigan as Howard Cantour. In the course of 12 minutes, we are able to see Cantour debate whether or not to post a harsh review about his hero’s latest movie.
LaBeouf captures the moral struggles of online film critics when it comes to posting reviews, pointing out the fact that sometimes these could be influenced by the writer’s self-indulgence or the need to please the people behind the film. An event such as pressing “enter” and publish a review has a certain impact in a critic’s life, it could be impressing another fellow critic or getting the opportunity to talk to your favorite director. As we watch Cantour’s inner debate unfold, we also get a glimpse into his views of cinema, the escapism film gives us and how people, just like Cantour, live their lives vicariously movie after movie.
As aspiring film critics here at TheYoungFolks.com, the quote “a critic is a warrior“, resonates with us immensely, and they couldn’t be anymore right about that.
