In what seems like an unconventional mash-up, composer Hans Zimmer will be teaming up with Steve McQueen to score McQueen’s upcoming film Twelve Years A Slave. In recent years the 8-time Academy Award nominee has been composing the scores for many big Hollywood blockbusters such as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy. Zimmer also scored this summer’s expected hit Man of Steel.

Director Steve McQueen is relatively new to the the Hollywood scene; his first feature film Hunger was released in 2008 but it was his controversial 2011 film Shame that really put him on the map.

The film is based on the true story of Solomon Northup—a free man who was kidnapped and sold back into slavery in 1841. It will star Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup and will also star Michael Fassbender,Quvenzhané Wallis and Brad Pitt. Twelve Years A Slave will be released on December 27,2013.

The pair-up of Hans Zimmer and Steve McQueen will be an interesting experience. McQueen’s films are about telling the story through more than just the dialogue. Zimmer is fantastic at setting the scene and pulling an emotional response from the audience using his music. With their combined talents plus a gritty/emotional topic such as slavery, Twelve Years A Slave is going to be a very intense and powerful film.
