Compared to the last few years, the road to this year’s Oscars has moved rather quickly. At least to me, it has. But the fun hasn’t really started yet. This morning, Oscar host Seth MacFarlene (Family Guy, Ted) and Emma Stone (Gangster Squad) announced the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards.
As always, there’s the nominees you expect, like Daniel Day-Lewis and pretty much all of the Lincoln nods It leads the race with 12 nominations). Life of Pi has the second most nominations with 11. And then, there are the surprises… Silver Linings Playbook must have really charmed Oscar voters, it landed nods in all of the 6 major categories. Foreign language film, Amour, also got some love with a surprising Best Director nomination for Michael Haneke. (Not sure if the Amour amour is actually shocking since a good percentage of Oscar voters are old.) Another non-surprising “surprise’ is that Leo DiCaprio got snubbed once again for his fantastic performance in Django Unchained. Beasts of the Southern Wild also shocked by securing a directing nod for Benh Zeitlin and Quvenzhane Wallis became the youngest actress to ever be nominated for Best Actress (Yay. young folks!)
The truest surprise is really the Best Director category, which snubbed both Ben Affleck (Argo) and Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty). I gotta say, The Academy, those omissions hurt. Check out the full list of nominees below, and keep tuning into our Oscar Buzz column for all updates and predictions for the rest of awards season.
