It’s now officially that time of year when studios get ready to schmooze and impress Oscar voters in any way that they can. Today, Warner Bros. launched its For Your Consideration websites for the following films: Argo, The Dark Knight Rises, Magic Mike, Cloud Atlas, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It’s no surprise to see Argo, The Hobbit and even Cloud Atlas as movies that Warner Bros. want to encourage Oscar voters to consider. What is a little surprising is to see that they’re considering The Dark Knight Rises and Magic Mike as serious contenders.
I very much enjoyed The Dark Knight Rises, despite not loving it as much as the brilliant The Dark Knight. I’m not the only one to feel a tad disappointed with Christopher Nolan’s last Batman film. It says a lot that WB is willing to put the effort into building an awards campaign for it. They have a lot of faith in it by asking voters to consider it in practically every single category. Off the bat, I can predict that it will have a much better chance in the technical categories than acting. Even Hans Zimmer may get a nod for his musical score. If any of the actors were to be nominated, I’d put my money on a Supporting Actor nod for Michael Caine, since his character, Alfred, was the heart of the film. The bottom of this post has the list of categories that WB is wanting to The Dark Knight Rises to nab.
As for Magic Mike, the hit male-stripper drama that starred Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey, WB is focusing on a Supporting Actor nod for McConaughey, as well as nods for the other actors and director Steven Soderbergh. Magic Mike was, surprisingly, a very good movie, and McConaughey delivered the best performance of the bunch. Yet, I can’t see it getting anything more than that, especially with the several other good (and better) movies Magic Mike is going up against. I definitely think it could surprise us though. I guess we’ll have to see how it fares at the several awards shows leading up to the Oscars.
As I mentioned above, Oscar campaigns for the fantastic Argo, the ambitious Cloud Atlas and the yet-to-be-seen The Hobbit were expected. I can’t say anything about The Hobbit, but of the other four films, Argo is the strongest contender. Although, as we know, a lot can change from now until February. Check out the For Your Consideration categories for all of these films below! And leave your thoughts on who should or shouldn’t be nominated!
