The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the other day that screenwriter Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) has been currently working on a screenplay for a brand new Star Wars film. For those that are a little confused with all the Star Wars news lately, let me give you a quick recap. In October, ǘber-media giant, The Walt Disney Co bought Lucasfilm LTD, which was the studio that created the original three films and the “I-wish-we-could-forget-you”. That means that Disney now owns the rights to distribute any Star Wars film that they want (they also own the rights to Indiana Jones but let’s deal with that bridge when we get to it). So being the ingenious company that they are, Disney went right to work on Episode 7.
Currently, Arndt has about 40-50 pages for the film and Disney hopes release the film sometime in 2015. Steven Spielberg has made it clear that he will not be directing this newest installment to the classic franchise. It’s doubtful that George Lucas will be directing anytime soon (it’s been rumored that he once swore that he would never do another Star Wars film again after the back-lash from the prequels). X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn and Sucker Punch director Zack Snyder seem to be among the many directors considered to direct the film.
The original trilogy stars: Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) have exposed interest in the newest installment. Sources close to Ford have reported that he is “upbeat about it” and open to the idea.
Personally, I really hope this film stays in “Pre-Production Purgatory”. It’s not that I have anything against Michael Arndt. I loved Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 and he seems to be well-versed in the Star Wars universe. The film just seems like a gambit to cash in on a beloved franchise. Star Wars is a legendary franchise. There really is no need to be added another installment, especially if it’s going to end up the prequels. I’m sure there are many fans around the world that would disagree with me. They’re more than happy to get some new material to add to the franchise. But for me, it just feels wrong that they can take a well-loved universe and contort it to their new views and ideas and expect the public to love it.
