Loved it. That’s it, there’s no lying about it, I’m letting you know upfront that I loved Wreck-It Ralph. Whoever grew up in the 90’s playing video games on their Super NES or any other console from back in the day, knows the feeling of loving a game so much even when it’s basic functions are so simple, compare this to today’s games: extremely high definition, special effects and the fact that you can even play with people around the world. Wreck-It Ralph deals with this nostalgia of how simple things were once.
The story begins with Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) at a some sort of AA meeting but for bad guys in video games, he realizes that after 30 years of being the oldest game at the arcade in the game Fix-It Felix Jr., that he wants to be good for once. Once the arcade is closed for the public, all of the characters can travel from one game to another from the Game Central Station, keeping in mind that once the arcade opens they have to go back where they belong. This was one of my favorite scenes from the movie, seeing so many characters like Bowser and Sonic on the screen, reminding gamers of those characters that were part of their childhood. While the hero of the game, Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer) gets all the recognition by winning medals after every game, Ralph realizes that the only way he’ll ever be respected is if he wins the medal. In order for Ralph to win the medal, he does the unthinkable and doesn’t come back to Fix-It Felix Jr. once the arcade opens, instead he goes to Hero’s Duty, a mission-like shooter game in which the winner obtains a medal.
While Ralph is at Hero’s Duty, he manages to get the medal but things go horribly wrong when he escapes the game in a pod in which he’s fighting off a bug from the game, Ralph and the bug crash into another game called Sugar Rush, a candy land car racing game. It is in Sugar Rush where Ralph meets Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a girl from Sugar Rush, whose only wish is to race in the game, but is not able to do it since she’s a glitch. Here is where their friendship begins and where both characters share a common goal, they want to make it within their game.
As expected from any Disney film, the animation, effects and even the soundtrack were great, but what stands out the most is the characters’ story arcs, in which even when Ralph is supposed to be the bad guy, you can’t help but care for him. Same goes for Vanellope, who’s existence as a glitch might put her game out of order but you still want her to succeed.
Wreck-It Ralph is a must-see, from the visuals, soundtrack, cameos, to the story and the gaming nostalgia that it brings, it is without a doubt one of Disney’s best.
