It’s shaping up to be another excellent year for A24. British writer-director Joanna Hogg’s latest film The Souvenir made waves at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and now the first official trailer has finally been released. The Souvenir stars Tom Burke and features both Tilda Swinton and the debut performance from Honor Swinton Byrne, her daughter. The film deals with a familiar subject of a turbulent romance in a similar vein to Paul Thomas Anderson’s recent film, Phantom Thread. In the trailer, we get a glimpse into the nuances of the relationship between Burke and the two members of the Swinton family. Julie (Swinton Byrne) goes against her mother and worried friends as she dives further down into this toxic relationship with Anthony (Burke).
The film seemingly looks to tackle the difficulties of the budding romance alongside the complexities of finding your true voice in an environment that is just unfit. It aims to address that time that every individual has that first euphoric romantic interaction and how easy it is being lost in the experience of another person. Critics praised the film’s gorgeous visual style and superb acting, with props specifically being levied toward Swinton Byrne. The Souvenir received the much coveted Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema at Sundance and Hogg has even started working on the sequel, which is set to also star Honor Swinton Byrne.
“The Souvenir” is set to officially release in theaters on May 17. Watch the official trailer below.
