Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is back….only to immediately go on vacation. Lazy bum.
After some enthusiastic encouragement from online fans, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures released the teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home. The EIGHTH film based on Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s beloved comic-book hero is the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and is again directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car, Clown) along with Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna returning to pen the script. Professional frog-eater Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker and is joined by Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Jon Favreau. Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury also joins the cast along with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Wildlife) as iconic Spidey villain Mysterio.
After returning from Thanos’s dust purgatory, Peter Parker (Holland) is joining his classmates on a summer school trip through Europe. Peter feels like he needs a break from being New York’s web-slinger and wants to focus on his growing feelings for MJ (Zendaya). But Nick Fury pops up to let Peter know that Spider-Man doesn’t take vacations, especially when random elemental monsters start popping up to do battle with the oddly powerful Mysterio (Gyllenhaal).
While the movie already makes a major fumble given that it cuts off the emotional impact of the ending of Avengers: Infinity War, Far From Home follows the same light adventurous tone of Homecoming. The European scene change feels like a nice way to change-up the challenge of Peter Parker balancing his personal life with being Spider-Man, not to mention opens up new possibilities for action scenes. Another of the new elements to watch out for in Far From Home is the budding romance between Peter and MJ, though Holland and Zendaya have solid chemistry together. Of course the real question mark is Gyllenhaal making his superhero movie debut as one of Spider-Man’s weirder villains. The trailer seems to imply that he’s going to be some sort of anti-hero defending the world against supernatural threats a la Doctor Strange, though given the movie’s version of Mysterio is special-effects master Quentin Beck, he could be faking the hero gimmick with clever illusions like Syndrome in The Incredibles.
