In the words of the dearly dusted Dr. Stephen Strange, “We’re in the endgame now.”
Marvel Studios has finally released the first trailer and title of the next Avengers film. The direct follow-up to this year’s Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame is the aftermath of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ failed attempt to stop Thanos (Josh Brolin) from acquiring the six Infinity Stones and wiping out half of the universe’s population. The trailer soaks in all of that failure as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) records a final message to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) while drifting aimlessly in space. Meanwhile Captain America (a now beardless Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) wallow in their self-pity and plan one final effort to save humanity. Plus, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) shows up! With a sword! Oh and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is at the Avengers headquarters because…they never gave him his gate code?
For a nearly two-and-a-half minute trailer, the footage is surprisingly sparse. A wise move on Marvel’s part considering the studio only just released a new trailer for Captain Marvel, who is set up to be the ace in the hole for the Avengers to battle Thanos. With only five months to go, the world keeps speculating about the exits of Evans, Downey, Chris Hemsworth and the rest of the original Avengers cast. Because if one thing can kill superheroes better than Thanos, it’s expired contracts.
