Marvel Studios had a pretty successful 2018, but 2019 might be even bigger with the arrival of Captain Marvel.
The superhero movie juggernaut released the second trailer for its next project and its first female-lead adventure. Based on the comic by the late Stan Lee and Gene Colan, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as the titular intergalactic superhero who crash lands on Earth years before the events of Iron Man. With the help of a younger Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), she scours the planet for the villainous alien race of Skrull while also discovering her connection to the Kree. Co-written and directed by Ana Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind, It’s Kind of a Funny Story), the film also stars Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Clark Gregg, Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou.
The Kree/Skrull battle seems to be the central conflict of the movie as evidence by the epic showdown between Captain Marvel and a lovely old granny (obviously a shapeshifting Skrull) Judging by the new and surprisingly brief trailer, the movie seems to follow the fish-out-of-water theme used in Thor and the later Captain America movies. Though the movie is filled with intergalactic battles, the set and costume design are more aligned with Thor than Guardians of the Galaxy, which is odd considering two villains from the first Guardians movie are in this as well. The humor is minor in this trailer which could be a blessing and a curse considering Marvel movies thrive so well on comedy yet their constant use of quips is a contributor to the superhero movie fatigue. The biggest concern here is whether or not the movie can juggle the triplet of stories in the movie: the Skrull war, Captain Marvel’s backstory with the Kree and her Earth origins.

One consistent positive so far has been Brie Larson in the title role. The Oscar winner has the poise and confidence required for a superhero movie and seeing her power up is a sight to behold. It’s a wonder as to whether or not she can match or top the star-making performance of Gal Gadot in DC’s Wonder Woman but Larson has enough charisma to stand out amongst the star-studded cast. The most interesting element of Captain Marvel is how she’ll fit into the preset future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically the events of the currently-untitled Avengers sequel due on May 3, 2019.
