Disney and Pixar continue to mine the world’s childhood nostalgia with its biggest gamble to date.
The animation giants released the first trailer for Toy Story 4 on Monday. The third sequel to Pixar’s game-changing children’s film is the first directorial feature for writer Josh Cooley (Inside Out) with a host of writing credits, including original creators John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter along with Stephany Folsom (Star Wars Resistance) and C.S. Anderson. The film once again features the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack reprising their roles as Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie. While details on the movie have been slim since it was first announced in 2014, the plot has been described as a “romantic comedy” involving Woody trying to find Bo Peep (voiced by Annie Potts).
The trailer itself doesn’t offer more details as it features Andy’s toys holding hands and frolicking to Judy Collins’s “Both Sides Now.” The only new thing is another character that looks like a first-grade art project shocked to find himself hanging with the gang, something many people watching the trailer probably also felt. Apart from a humorous slow-motion bit of the toys prat falling, the trailer only provides the official release of next summer.
Despite the sunshine and happy thoughts the trailer implies, Toy Story 4 has had speckles of controversy throughout its development. Not only does it seemingly negate the finality of 2010’s Toy Story 3, Lasseter was originally set to co-direct before stepping away from the project in July 2017 (months before allegations of misconduct were raised against him). Then original writers Will McCormack and Rashida Jones (Celeste & Jesse Forever) left the project in November 2017 due to “philosophical differences.”
