‘Captive State’ teaser poetically validates Ancient Aliens guy

“Let us give thanks.”

And why not, honestly? Through their efforts, joblessness, economic hardship and criminality have become concepts of the old world. Remember, though, that “their” does not denote humans — or anything Earth-bound.

Such is life in Captive State, the latest film from Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ director Rupert Wyatt, one that has been going on for almost 10 years. The story, which Wyatt co-writes with Erica Beeney, will take place in Chicago and focus on the lives impacted by the invasion, namely those eager for a revolt and, interestingly, those who benefit from it. The teaser, which weaves elegance into the unnerving with a string-heavy score and odd soundscape, clearly shows the two factions, along with glimpses of a low-key sci-fi world in the vein of Never Let Me Go and the recently released Kin. Ever want to know what a football game with a spacecraft hovering above the stadium would look like?

Also returning to the sci-fi genre with Wyatt (Rise was eight years ago!) are stars John Goodman and Vera Farmiga. In the trailer, the 10 Cloverfield Lane villain and Source Code’s MVP are seen as a couple who are pretty contented in this disguised dystopia. What’s even more notable is that Goodman’s character seems to know how to reach the extraterrestrial guests (one of the first stills show him prepped for launch).

Also starring the film are Ashton Sanders (Moonlight’s teenaged Chiron), D.B. Sweeney, James Ransone, Madeline Brewer and Machine Gun Kelly. In an interview with Rolling Stone last June, MGK revealed two incidents involving him during production, one in particular he said afterward affected his ability to perform on stage.

Captive State will be in theaters March 29, 2019. For more on the film and an eventual review, stay with The Young Folks.
