[UPDATE] In-Rang Film Introduces Wolves of Peacekeeping In New Trailer

Per an exclusive scoop from Variety, Netflix has picked up “nearly global rights” to the film, a scenario similar to Bong Joon-ho’s Okja (our review). Additionally, the publication also reported that the film will be at the prestigious San Sebastian Film Festival in September.

An international trailer for the film has also landed, which you can watch right below. There’s no English subtitles yet, unfortunately, but we will let you know when it’s here.

In 2029, the much-discussed Korean unification is a go, though the action is met with unrest. Fervent unrest. To eradicate the chaos, orchestrated by a group called Sect, a special police unit — the In-Rang — is formed. But do keep in mind that this film — also titled In-Rang — is not a video-game adaptation; it’s a live-action version of the 1999 anime Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade written by Mamoru Oshii, director of the original (and better) Ghost in the Shell. And here’s some interesting news: According to director Kim Jee-woon, (A Tale of Two Sisters), “In-Rang” means “werewolf,” which is what you also get when you translate “Jin-Roh.”

For his telling, Kim moves the setting from German-occupied Japan to tensely fused Korea, localizing the narrative like his equally celebrated filmmaker friend Park Chan-wook did with his rendition of The Handmaiden. The film’s plot will follow In-Rang member Im Joong-kyung (Gang Dong-won) uncovering more shadiness behind the nation’s conflict and possibly facing a loyalty crisis after meeting a red-coated woman (Han Hyo-joo).

“The fans probably had both anticipation and anxiety for the live-action version of the film. I felt the same way,” Kim said in In-Rang’s press conference held Monday. “I was more anxious because I was the one who made the film and thought it was too much of a reckless decision. I knew the film is going to be criticized whether it is good or not. But this situation made me work harder than ever.”

What’s also worth noting is that, judging by a familiar logo at the trailer’s start, In-Rang will be Warner Bros.’ second time financing and distributing a Korean production, with the first being The Age of Shadows, an espionage thriller Kim also helmed and released to critical acclaim — at home and abroad.

It is not yet known when In-Rang will come to the U.S., but the film will hit Korean theaters on July 25. Lucky! For additional updates on the film and an eventual review, stay with The Young Folks.
