It’s been seven years since the world saw tattooed, eyebrow-less hacker Lisbeth Salander on the big-screen, and things are looking a little different this time around.
Sony Pictures released the first trailer for The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the newest movie adventure of Stieg Larsson’s literary characters Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. You might remember them being played by Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig under the direction of David Fincher in 2011’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. This time around, Golden Globe-winner Claire Foy (The Crown, Unsane) dons the chopped-up black hair and hoodie/leather jacket combo sported by Lisbeth under the direction of Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead).
Despite the change in lineup, The Girl in the Spider’s Web seems to pick up right in Lisbeth’s wheelhouse. The trailer shows Lisbeth breaking into a rich scumbag’s house, tying him up, blackmailing him and torturing him after he assaults two prostitutes without punishment. From there, Lisbeth seems to be escaping some sort of past incident or confrontation that haunts her.
With Spider’s Web, it seems that Sony wanted Alvarez to make something dumber and more violent, more akin to an action movie or some kind of grimy thriller like his Don’t Breathe. The cinematography seems to be similar to Fincher’s movie despite being done by Pedro Luque, who also worked with Alvarez on Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe. It still has the pulsating techno music that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross did for Fincher’s film and the seemingly grisly violence in the Dragon Tattoo, but there seems to be more focus on Lisbeth’s rage than any kind of mystery or actual plot.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web hits theaters on November 9. What do you think of the new trailer? Let us know in the comments and be sure to stay with The Young Folks for the latest movie trailers and news.
