We are in full swing with awards nominations! Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash announced the nominations for the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards this morning in Hollywood. The SAG awards, which honors the best film and television performances of the past year, will have its first ever host, The Good Place star Kristen Bell, for the upcoming show.
The nominations are an interesting mix of surprising and predictable choices. For TV, last year’s winner Stranger Things landed four nominations for the main cast, stunt ensemble, and individually Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour. Netflix’s GLOW surprised us this morning, also landing four nods, including Best Comedy Ensemble and Best Actress in a Comedy for Alison Brie.
As for movies, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri led the pack with four nominations for its cast, Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. The Big Sick finally and officially entered the awards race with nominations for Best Ensemble and Supporting Actress for Holly Hunter. Get Out keeps its momentum with two nominations, and it’s fantastic that Dee Rees’ Mudbound is starting to gain more recognition. While Lady Bird remains consistent in this race with three main nods for its cast, Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalfe. However, The Post, the new Spielberg movie with an excellent ensemble performance, was snubbed all together by SAG.
After an exciting year at the movies, it’s gearing up to be a fun and hopefully continuously surprising awards season. The Screen Actors Guild Awards will air on TNT and TBS Sunday, January 21, at 8 p.m. ET.
