After a solid first episode, The Young Folks presents episode two of the movie podcast, Underseen on the Big Screen. Hosted by Tyler Christian, each episode dives into the overlooked realm of cinema, namely movies that didn’t fare well at the box office but later gained cult followings in the home media market. The goal of each episode is to interest you in lesser-known movies that didn’t get the right exposure they deserved in theaters, and believe me there are more enough to make this podcast cruise ahead for the long term.
In this episode, Tyler is joined by Matt Goudreau for an in-depth discussion on multiple movies solely written or co-written by Shane Black. Nearly all of Black’s scripts have been hits with critics, however outside of Lethal Weapon and Iron Man 3, most of the movies themselves struggled at the U.S. box office. Bad timing for the release in regard to larger scale movies releasing the week before were mostly to blame. Nonetheless, his trademark writing style is beloved for the witty dialogue, unique character duos, skewering of genre cliches, and setting many during the Christmas season.
To commemorate the recent 30th anniversary of his work on the 1987 cult classic, The Monster Squad, Matt and I examine Black’s writing amongst other unique aspects in the aforementioned movie, as well as Last Action Hero, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and his directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
The topic for each future episode will vary as it will tie in to any of the following: birthday of a director or actor, film anniversaries, upcoming 2017 releases, specific genre (ex. Horror when Halloween draws close), etc.
DISCLAIMER: There were two errors in the recording I’d like to clarify before you listen. First off, I mentioned that the date of The Monster Squad anniversary was August 12th when it’s really the 14th. Second, I said early on “we’ll be discussing three movies,” but rather four.
