With 3D being everywhere nowadays and the fact that it has even taken over our home televisions, the film industry is trying to pull off a lot of 3D re-releases in the next couple of months and for next year, as well. Many of the re-releases are made to coincide with the Blu-Ray releases of the film.
The List:
Finding Nemo 3D:
With the Blu-Ray release getting closer and closer to it’s winter release, it is time to journey with the fishy duo of a concerned paternal clownfish and a tang with short term memory loss in the Pixar classic, Finding Nemo, gets a limited re-release this week in a 3D as well as 2D. It started it’s release last Friday, September 14th and will run until probably September 28th(about two weeks). It has been advertised for a while both with trailers, promos, and an anti-mobile device AMC Theaters advertisement. So far, it has gotten positive reviews saying that the 3D surprisingly improves the already impressive movie.

As a side note, Indiana Jones and The Raiders of The Lost Ark was released in 2D IMAX last week, but is now going to run in re-mastared 2D in normal movie theaters for about one more week.

Monsters Inc 3D:
Being released in 3D and 2D on December 19th, 2012 in preparation for it’s prequel, Monster’s University, that is being released next summer, the amazing Pixar hit, Monster’s Inc, is going to be re-released in 3D in the same spirit as Finding Nemo.
Independence Day 3D:
In a change from the Pixar re-releases, the 20th Century Fox star studded, alien invasion, disaster hit starring Will Smith, Independence Day, which rocked the 1996 July 4th weekend is being re-released in 3D on July 4th weekend 2013 on July 3rd, 2013. That is just 17 years and 2 days after it was first released. We will have to wait and decide if it is going to be a hit, the second time around.
Jurassic Park 3D:
Dinosaurs will majecticlly wander the screen in 3D on April 5th, 2012. Jurrasic Park 3D was originally going to have a release date on July 18th, 2012, but now the Jeff Bridges-Ryan Reynolds action flick, R.I.P.D will take Jurrasic Park 3D’s place. The still technologically impressive and advanced movie was a hit with lots of expectations and curiosity resting on it. Even with the less favorable second and third Jurassic Park films, a fourth movie was officially announced in July of this year. So this is both an 20th anniversary re-release and a re-release to re-kindle excitement for the next dino-chapter. I think this is the kind of movie that 3D is supposed to be used for.
Intresting Fact: James Cameron just released information about how he almost directed Jurrasic Park. He lost the rights by mere hours to Steven Spielberg. Cameron said his Jurrasic Park would have been “much nastier” and more like “Aliens with dinosaurs”. He continued to say, “I realized that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids. Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds, we can all enjoy it too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film.”
The Little Mermaid 3D:
The Disney (considered by some controversial) animated classic is coming to theaters in 3D on September 13, 2013. The reasoning for this re-release out of many other movies was after the huge success of The Lion King 3D, Disney decided to re-release another classic movie of theirs. The wait for this one will be longer, but it is sure to make loads of cash.
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of The Clones 3D
Now for an even more delayed wait compared to February 2012. As the Star Wars prequel and original saga is being re-released in 3D chronologically with Episode I coming out in 3D last February, the 2002 Star Wars Episode II will be released on September 20, 2013 in 3D.
Box Office Expectations: With the success of Episode I in 3D and it now being the highest grossing Star Wars movie, I expect that every new Star Wars movie re-released in 3D will be the highest grossing Star Wars until the next 3D chapter comes out. Meaning that Episode II will do well, but with Episode III coming out only a month later, it is hard to see which one will be the clear winner.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of The Sith 3D
This is the only prequel saga Star Wars movie that I actually have a desire to see and I think many people will feel the same way as I do. But oddly, a little more than a month after the release of Episode II 3D, Episode III 3D will hit theaters on October 11th, 2013. My theory is that 2oth Century Fox has to get all of the Star Wars movies into 3D to please the entire movie-going crowd, but even though people will pay to see the prequel Star Wars films in 3D, what people really want is A New Hope 3D. So, they want to get the original saga out as fast as possible. But the releasing of the films is still questionably odd, because Episode I 3D came out in Febuary 2012, Episode II will come out September 2013, and Episode III 3D in October 2013. I would have thought that a spring re-release of Episode II would have worked out better.
I am sure that there will be even more to come more in the future, but those are the planned 3D re-releases of this year and next year.
