Underseen on the Big Screen Episode 1: James Gunn

The Young Folks is proud to announce its newest movie podcast, Underseen on the Big Screen. Hosted by Tyler Christian, each episode dives into the overlooked realm of cinema, namely movies that didn’t fare well at the box office but later gained cult followings in the home media market. The goal of each episode is to interest you in lesser-known movies that didn’t get the right exposure they deserved in theaters, and believe me there are more enough to make this podcast cruise ahead for the long term.

In the premiere episode, Tyler is joined by Jon Winkler and Michael Fairbanks for an in-depth discussion on Slither and Super, the first two movies directed by the architect of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, James Gunn. This weekend is special for Gunn as not only does he celebrate his birthday, but also the recent three year anniversary of the first GOTG. Before he was hired by Marvel Studios, Gunn crafted two profoundly unique genre movies, one of which paid gleeful tribute to his favorite 80s horror movies (Slither), and the other a twisted subversion of familiar comic book tropes (Super). Although the financial returns for both movies were lukewarm to say the least, they were nonetheless instrumental in him getting the GOTG job, in addition to building a devoted fanbase that grew fond of his wacky vision.

The topic for each episode will vary as it will focused on any of the following: birthday of a director or actor, film anniversaries, upcoming 2017 releases, specific genre (ex. Horror when Halloween draws close), etc.
