Dragon Tattoo screenwriter Steven Zaillian is still working on the script, and nothing will move forward until the screenplay is nailed down. While there’s still no director attached, Fincher remains the first choice and hasn’t ruled out returning. And despite the uncertain timetable, the film is still definitely moving forward, although the source says that they are not in a rush and at this point there is no information about when it might be released.
The film released last year was modestly successful at the box office. Frankly, I don’t think Sony’s campaign for “The Feel-Bad Movie of Christmas” was a brilliant one. I’m sure it’s mild success is the true reason why Sony is taking their sweet time with the sequel. On top of that, many big franchises are having their day in Hollywood. The Hunger Games, The Hobbit and 50 Shades of Grey are taking up audiences’ attention. Is there room for some Dragon Tattoo love?
Regardless, I loved The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, in particular the American version. Not because I’m a die-hard David Fincher fan, but because I found Rooney Mara’s performance as Lisbeth quite captivating and moving. In the subsequent novels, Lisbeth’s life takes many twists and turns, and I’ve been looking forward to seeing Mara portraying all of that. Luckily, Daniel Craig (who plays Mikael Blomkvist) and Mara are both locked into the sequel. Obviously, I hope Fincher returns to direct. I’ll be kind of heartbroken if he doesn’t. Yet, I don’t think my interest would fade if another (great) director took his place.
