An hour and a half before Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, Netflix decided to play some politics and release a teaser of their hit original series, House of Cards. Watch it below.
Well then. First thing’s first: we have to give props to Netflix for their great timing. An hour and a half before Trump was sworn, close enough to the actual event where everyone’s online watching, but far enough to be an event in itself.
But more so, we have to be angry with Netflix. Why on earth are they teasing us with this inane teaser? The flag is upside down, the sky is darkened as an ominous White House stands oh so close in the distance. And of course, a classroom of children stating the Pledge of Allegiance. What is it with prepubescent voices that scream “creepy?”
But Netflix makes a good point– we should be angry with how today went down. You’re telling me I have to wait until May 30th to binge watch the new season? We started this series expecting a February release date for each following season, and now Netflix is playing the responsible friend card by forcing you to wait until after finals to watch the new season.

Let’s get serious and talk about the [supposedly final] season. We left season four with Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) surviving a shot in the chest but probably not surviving a Herald article about his potentials killings, all the while he’s dealing with a terrorist taking Americans hostage. Claire (Robin Wright) finds her way to become his VP pick, and they’re facing steep competition by Will Conway (Joel Kinnaman). With all this in mind, the Underwoods decide to start a war in the hopes of gaining people’s votes out of fear as opposed to love– a la Macchiavelli of course.
And so we now have to think. Last season ended with Frank’s bone-chilling last words of “We create the terror.” Is that what this teaser is about? Is this really just a sign that things are going to go far more downhill than we expected? All signs point to yes and it seems like we’ll only have to wait– begrudgingly until May– to see how it all unfolds.
