There’s plenty of new media to look forward to in 2017, from the most likely good (more Doctor Who! More Dirk Gently!) to the hopefully good (that Guy Ritchie King Arthur movie), to the “there is no way this is going to be good but I will consume it anyway” (god bless the 50 Shades Darker soundtrack). Needless to say, 2017’s going to be an awesome year for pop culture.

  1. Doctor Who Series 10
  2. Generation X – Marvel X-Men comic
  3. Hamlet – audio drama released by Big Finish productions
  4. The Lego Batman Movie
  5. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
  6. America – Marvel America Chavez comic
  7. Still Star-Crossed
  8. Dua Lipa – Dua Lipa
  9. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency Season 2

Amanda Hayman’s Top 10 Most Anticipated of 2017

Since 2016 was an epic year for entertainment and media, 2017 is looking to be bright with new Star Wars, the beginning of the end for Game of Thrones, new Stephen King movies, Lady Gaga’s hitting the road on her new tour and, fingers crossed, a new George R.R. Martin book on the horizon.

  1. Star Wars Episode VIII
  2. Game of Thrones Season 7
  3. The Winds of Winter by George R.R. Martin? (not yet confirmed, but I can only hope)
  4. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Beren and Lúthien
  5. Midnight Texas premiere on NBC
  6. The Dark Tower
  7. Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices, #2) by Cassandra Clare

Allyson Johnson’s Top 10 Most Anticipated of 2017

1. Star Wars Episode VIII – Because ever since The Force Awakens ended, I was clamoring for a new, two hour adventure with Rey, Finn and Poe. With director Rian Johnson behind the camera, there’s no guessing just where the sagas latest installment will bring us, but it’s easy to expect something both stylish and larger than life while simultaneously offering up some deeper looks into these characters we’ve so instantly become attached to.

2. Sense8 Season 2 – As one of the few diehards of the Wachowski sisters, Sense8 was always on my radar but I didn’t finish the first season until this past summer. With the recent Christmas special that premiered on Netflix, introducing many of the upcoming storylines and themes of season two, it’s hard to keep that excitement at bay. With one of the best ensemble casts who share an enormous amount of chemistry and a world bounding visual narrative, Sense8 might not always be perfect, but it’s a blast to watch.

3. LandlineObvious Child, one of my favorite films of 2014 and is one of the best films of the last 15 years, making the new team up between director Gillian Robespierre and star Jenny Slate all the more exciting.

4. The Beguiled – Sofia Coppola is one of the finest directors working today and one of the few directors allowed to share the title of auteur in a male dominated field.

5. Baby Driver – Because anything and everything directed by Edgar Wright will be on my most anticipated list, even when the film in question stars the charisma repellent Ansel Elgort. I must suffer through.

6. Lean on Pete – Andrew Haigh in just a few short years has become one of the must-see directors of our time. From Weekend to 45 Years, he’s demonstrated both an incredible empathy for his characters while also managing to produce something visually stunning and visceral.

7. iZombie Season 3 – iZombie has lowkey become of the major highlights of a reinvigorated CW slate over the past few years. Wonderfully clever scripts, visual tricks and a great cast of characters with strong chemistry has allowed the series to thrive, even if people haven’t caught on. Season two left on a major cliffhanger and truths were revealed, leaving fans wondering what on earth season three could bring.

8. Annihilation – After producing one of the best, original science fiction films in years with Ex Machina Alex Garland is back, this time, with a book adaptation. Following four women in a post apocalyptic type world, the cast is a killer one with Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Gina Rodriguez and more.

9. The Shape of Water – Because even after I didn’t like Crimson Peak, I will always be chasing any project of Guillermo del Toro and a film by del Toro with Michael Shannon in it is a must.

10. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – I suppose there’s reason to worry that James Gunn might’ve lost his energy (or enthusiasm) when it came to the sequel of the incredibly popular Guardians of the Galaxy, but if the trailers are anything to go by, it seems like there’s only room to grow. Baby Groot alone is worth the price of admission but the main highlight from the footage shown so far is the abundance of color on screen. The best superhero films are the ones that visually pop.

Evan Griffin’s Most Anticipated for 2017

10. The End of 2016
You were all thinking it. I’m just saying it.

9. Justice League
HAHAHHAHHAHAHHAAHA. Oh my god. This is going to be fu*king awful.

8. Logan
This could either be a really excellent blend of The Last of Us and the comic plot Old Man Logan, or it could just be a disaster. Either way, there’s no possibility of me missing out on HUgh Jackman’s last turn as Wolverine after seeing every other one in the movie theater.

7. Thor: Ragnarok
The director of both Flight of the Conchords AND What We Do In The Shadows directing a THOR movie? With The Hulk?? AND JEFF GOLDBLUM? $$$$$$

6. Spider-Man Homecoming
Spidey will always be my favorite hero, and I’m glad to see a film where he actually is a high school student dealing with offbeat high school things like we always wanted him to be. It will be an absolute joy to have him as a part of the Marvel Universe and see him team up with Iron Man and who knows whoever else. Plus, the director promised a meshing with a John Hughes movie, which is exactly what I never knew I always wanted in a Spider-Man movie.

5. Mr. Robot Season 3
What happened at the end there??? Where is Eliott? What happened with Tyrell?? What is the Dark Army gonna do now? WHAT ARE CHINA?

4. Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
I put this on my list for most anticipated the last (two) years, but now the game actually has a name and a known premise, and it will be on Nintendo’s new hardware, so I can play it wherever I want!

3. Nintendo Switch
New hardware from Nintendo! This will be the ride or die moment for the House of Mario, and I hope that their new Nvidia run device is good enough to get all the acclaim and praise that the industry would so very much like to give it. It’s your move, Nintendo. Are you going to take the throne that anyone would entrust to you? Wilst thou fly? Or Wilst Thou suck?

2. Red Dead Redemption 2
The last entry in this franchise is a higher quality game than the last three Grand Theft Auto titles. There, I said it. I’ll ride off with Red Dead any day of the week in contention to GTA. Of course, the only trailer we’ve seen is proof of concept and a show off of the new engine, but the achievement in open world mapping and online posse settings in 2010 with the last game provided blueprints for what would be the current iteration of Grand Theft Auto online, and with that finally receiving the support that was clamored for, I’m sure some notes have been made on how to make this the definitive Rockstar Games online experience.

1. Star Wars Episode VIII
Who is Rey related to? Is Luke mad or just disappointed?? Did Captain Phasma survive the garbage pit? Is Kylo Ren actually Rey’s brother or Cousin? Or is he actually stronger in the Force than we thought and he’s actually a double agent for Luke?? I like that theory.

Ryan Gibbs’ Top 10 Most Anticipated Pop Culture Things of 2017

It should not come as a shock to the people who know me well that I went for Los Campesinos!’ new album as my most anticipated thing of 2017. I’ve loved that band more than any other over the past decade, and I’m incredibly excited to see what their sixth full-length LP has in store (knowing them, more songs about British soccer, awkward breakups and gallows humor). My second choice is Supercalifragile, the sixth and final album by the wonderful power pop group Game Theory. I love that band a whole bunch, and it’s going to be wonderful and cathartic to hear new material from their late frontman Scott Miller one final time.

  1. Los Campesinos! – Sick Scenes
  2. Game Theory – Supercalifragile
  3. Japandroids – Near to the Wild Heart of Life
  4. Being able to actually purchase an NES Classic
  5. Star Wars: Episode VIII
  6. Battlebots Season 3
  7. The Criterion Collection release of Being There
  8. The new album from Fleetwood Mac that’s apparently supposed to come out
  9. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of the Electric Light Orchestra
  10. Doctor Who series 10

Tyler Christian’s Top 10 Most Anticipated of 2017

What a weird year 2016 has been for the entertainment industry. Although it was highlighted by an unwanted amount of disappointing blockbusters and celebrity deaths, television and independent cinema reigned superior once again with their overall superb content. 2017 though boasts more promise for cinema as a whole to rebound, in addition to HBO possessing its most intriguing lineup of new shows in quite some time.

  1. The Deuce season 1 (New HBO drama series from “The Wire” creator, David Simon)
  2. The Criterion Collection release of the Before… Trilogy
  3. Star Wars: Episode VIII
  4. The Defenders season 1
  5. Blade Runner 2049
  6. Baby Driver
  7. Okja (New Bong Joon-ho film)
  8. The Punisher season 1
  9. Big Little Lies (HBO miniseries)
  10. Room 104 season 1 (New HBO anthology comedy series from the Duplass Brothers)
