At a local convention this week, two veteran Dragon Ball Z voice actors have indicated that full localization is under way on the highly anticipated title Dragon Ball FighterZ, including recording their lines for the full release.
Speaking at Salt Lake Comic Con, Sean Schemmel (Goku) and Christopher Sabat (Vegeta, Piccolo) briefly talked about the upcoming licensed fighter as a part of a Dragon Ball panel focusing on the two. While talking about getting a chance to play the game’s recent closed beta, Schemmel said “we just finished recording.” Schemmel also expressed joy in seeing a game he’s wanted for “15 years,” and both himself and Sabat believe the game is quite challenging.
This would suggest that while FighterZ still has the vague release window of 2018, progress might be to the point where the game can begin the final march to releasing. This could even mean a true global release is planned. We should keep in mind that FighterZ likely has far more characters in it than we’ve seen so far, so Sean Schemmel’s comment does not necessarily mean that all lines have been recorded. However, Chris Sabat is an ADR director and a line producer with Funimation (who dubs Dragon Ball) and is more involved than only recording lines. He said he played it with another producer to ensure lines are working in-game correctly and “it’s very hard, but very good.”
Additionally, if you played Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (or are planning on picking it up on Nintendo Switch), one character in the game will sound different compared to the anime. Goku Black, who was a bonus character in the game but has not yet appeared in the English version of the series, is of course voiced by Sean Schemmel. However, in order preserve spoilers, the Japanese team would not give him any details on what kind of character Black actually was. As a result, when voicing that character for the game, Schemmel had to guess how the character should act and sound in their voice. Since then, the English team became aware of Black’s characterization, with Schemmel and Sabat saying they plan to work together to give Goku Black a more appropriate voice when they appear in Dragon Ball Super.
