Welcome to the first recap for the Re-Read of Insurgent here on The Young Folks! The start of the new year means that we are officially in the same year that Insurgent will be released in theaters.
For today, we re-read chapters 1 through 11 of Insurgent by Veronica Roth.
Re-Read highlights—the most important parts of each chapter. (WARNING: contains spoilers)
Chapter 1: the introduction to Amity and Johanna
Chapter 2: Tris’s post-traumatic stress with the gun after shooting Will; Amity’s decision process to be a safe house but having to abide by the rules
Chapter 3: Tris overhears a conversation between Marcus and Johanna that the Abnegation had information that Erudite was trying to steal; Tobias and Tris disagreeing about Marcus and his intentions re: the sensitive information
Chapter 4: Tris tells Caleb the results of her aptitude test and tells him about her ability to resist simulations

Chapter 5: Tris confronts Marcus to try to learn more about the information Erudite was trying to steal from Abnegation; she has a nightmare about killing Will
Chapter 6: Peter tries to steal the hard drive with simulation information on it; Tris attacks Peter; Tris is given peace serum (a fan favorite scene from the book—I’d guess it is very likely to appear in the movie in some form); Johanna hints that she disagrees with the Amity that they should stay neutral in the conflict
Chapter 7: The Erudite come to Amity, first sign that some Dauntless have continued to side with Erudite; Tris saves Peter’s life when Dauntless attack; the Abnegation, Tris, Four, Caleb, Marcus, and Susan flee; Tris breaks down and can’t shoot her gun
Chapter 8: They run into Edward and the factionless on the train; the name “Tobias Eaton” keeps them from being kicked off; discovery that Four’s mother is still alive and leads the Factionless

Chapter 9: Learning that the Factionless is full of Divergent; Evelyn is in place to take over and replace Erudite
Chapter 10: Tris learns her father was Erudite; Four and Tris go to Candor headquarters where they are arrested for unknown reasons
Chapter 11: Four is accused of crimes against humanity and Tris of being his accomplice; they learn they will be put under truth serum in front of the entire Candor and remaining Dauntless factions
At this point in the re-read of Insurgent, it appears to me as if Chapter 11 is where the movie will have to truly begin to differ from the book due to changes made in the Divergent movie.

In Divergent (the book), Four was put under simulation by Jeanine to run the entire Dauntless vs. Abnegation simulation and Four’s charges come from the fact that video records show that he is running the simulation. This was not the case in the Divergent movie, where Jeanine was in charge of the simulation the whole time and Four’s simulation had him following direct orders but nothing else. The rest of the changes made in the Divergent movie thus far shouldn’t have a huge impact on the course of the Insurgent movie.
What do you think will prompt the use of truth serum on Four and Tris? Will they do it at all or will the movie take another course? Let me know what you think in the comments below!
